Birmingham’s Local Welfare Provision (LWP) scheme helps vulnerable people in short-term crisis with food and essential items. It is grant-based, which means people who receive help from it will not have to repay anything. It is not intended to replace the councils statutory duties.

Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP) are for people who need extra help with their rent when Housing Benefit, Local Housing Allowance, or Universal Credit doesn’t cover the full amount.

If you are suffering severe financial hardship or your tenancy is at risk, you may be able to get a DHP to help.

Financial help.

If you’ve lost your job or are struggling for food or rent, there are services that

can help. Local welfare provision can make a big difference if you are in a crisis and need

food, fuel or basic white goods. Discretionary Housing Payments may be able to help with

rent. And there are food banks across Birmingham that are here to help.
