John Henry Newman Catholic College has ten Heart Values to position and focus the College’s formation programme, personal development work, and individual encounters between staff and students. The Heart Values enable the College to directly engage with all students to enable both personal and spiritual growth towards self-realisation.Self-realisation is a term that perfectly captures everything we want our students to be when they leave JHNCC to take their place in the wider community; that is, someone who fulfils their potential and ambition in life by knowing, or discerning, God’s will for their life and then living it.
St John Henry Newman understood all about the importance of education for personal enlightenment, and his teachings provide a solid foundation for all of the work here at JHNCC.
The Heart Values
The ten Heart Values are divided into two sets: five values to define the educational and personal development desired for every JHNCC student and five values to enable the spiritual, Catholic development and enlightenment for all students.
Spiritual Heart Values
- Holiness: Trying to live the life that God wants us to live and showing forgiveness, compassion, and kindness.
- Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others, responding with genuine sympathy and concern.
- Altruism: Putting others’ interests first, helping without expecting rewards.
- Reconciliation: Building relationships, apologizing when wrong, and forgiving others.
- Truthfulness: Being honest and taking responsibility for actions without blame or anger.
Personal Development Heart Values
- Hard Work: Working hard to achieve ambitions and goals.
- Excellence: Completing tasks to the best of our ability.
- Articulacy: Finding and using our voice to be heard and understood.
- Reading: Essential for learning and personal enlightenment.
- Teamwork: Collaborating and supporting others effectively.
The Heart Curriculum
Each week, during formation time, the whole school follows a programme of teaching that places the Heart Values within the context of modern life and current events.
These activities present important issues and events within the framework of the Heart Values and the teachings of St John Henry Newman, so that all students can gain a thorough understanding of their place in modern society.
This year, the Heart Curriculum will follow this programme outline
